Following major efforts under the Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015), primary enrolment in developing countries now stands at 91%. However, absenteeism and drop-outs remain major challenges, and 57 million primary- age children worldwide are not enrolled in school at all. 103 million youths worldwide lack basic literacy skills due to limited access to education, over 60% of whom are female.
SDG 4 (Quality Education)is aiming to ensure that by 2030, all boys and girls will have access to free, equitable and quality primary education. The various targets of the SDG work together to ensure that a child will have access to an equal level of education regardless of gender or place of birth, benefitting from access to safe and appropriate facilities and the support of qualified teachers.
